Quick Start Guide for First-Time Visitors

1. Search for somebody. Searching is free. If the list of search results contains a record that looks interesting, go to step 2.
2. Create Login - register an email address and password. You will be automatically logged in.
3. Purchase the records directly or buy site credits:

1. Buy Credits so you can view records quickly and for less money. Click Last Results to return to your search results and click View Record for each record you want to view. Each View deducts one credit from your account.

2. Put records in your shopping cart, then click View Cart, then Purchase to buy just those records, or click Buy Credits if you decide it's worthwhile to do so. After payment, you can use your credits to view the items in your cart.

4. You may view your previously purchased records at any time by clicking on My Previous Orders. Already-purchased records are also freely viewable from your list of search results when you are logged in.
5. Consider signing up for the Match My Records service. This service matches you up with other researchers who have viewed the same records as you. To sign up, click My Account and click the checkbox next to Match My Records, then click the blue Change Account button. You can view your matches at any time by clicking My Matches in the left menu when you are logged in.

Creating a Login

Registration takes about 30 seconds. First, enter an email address and password. You may also set various preferences here, such as whether you wish to receive an email with every record you view, your preferred currency, mailing list subscription/unsubscription, etc.

Two Purchase Methods

We offer two ways to purchase records: with a shopping cart or with site credits. The shopping cart is handy if you have fewer than 4 records to buy and you only plan to visit our site once, or if you are just trying it out. Site credits are more cost-efficient if you want to come back later to buy, or if you plan to buy more than 5 records. Using credits is also faster than buying single records because you don't make as many trips through the payment system.

Shopping Cart

Select one or more records from your search results, add them to your shopping cart, and pay for them all at once through our secure credit/debit card link or by cheque. You get discounted prices when you buy more records (see the discount schedule below) in one order. If you pay online, you see your records instantly on your screen, plus they are delivered to you by email. If you pay by cheque, the records are delivered to you by email as soon as we receive your payment.

Site Credits

Purchase a quantity of pre-paid credits, which you then use to view records. You get better quantity discounts when you purchase credits and you can select your records over several sessions. This enables you to get the best pricing and have a longer period in which to choose your records.

• after you log in, the Buy Credits option will appear in the left menu; click on it to buy credits for the site
• after you have bought credits, when you use a credit to purchase a record, you see your results instantly - there is no shopping cart. You select a single record from your search results, click on the View button, and your results pop up onscreen.
• each time you click on a View button, one credit is subtracted from your account
• one credit gets you one baptism, burial, or marriage, or one entire household in a census
• credits are good forever - they have no expiration date

Payment Methods

For online payment, we accept the following:

• Credit cards: Visa, Mastercard, Eurocard, American Express, Discover, JCB
  
• Debit cards: Maestro (was Switch), Solo, Visa Delta, Visa Electron, any debit card with a Visa/Mastercard logo
  
• PayPal: use your existing PayPal account funded by direct transfer from your bank account or credit card, or use PayPal without an account by entering your credit/debit card data for each transaction
• We use the secure card processing services of WorldPay and PayPal (see Policies / Security page) to handle online payments. After you enter your payment details and click on the "Continue" button, you will be redirected to Durham Records Online where your order will be displayed.

Pay by Mail

You may also mail payment by cheque or money order. To pay by mail, go through the order process and select Pay by Mail when it appears. This will create an order form which you can print and send to the address on the form. Please make your cheque or money order payable to the name shown on the form. Your order results will be returned to you by email as soon as we receive your payment.
