About Durham Records Online

Durham Records Online is an international partnership of dedicated genealogists and historians.
Holly Wanless Cochran, founder of Hollyhock Press, publisher of genealogical records, has a computer science background and is the inventor of the site. She is the author of our search engine and online payment system, and handles all technical aspects of the site, including customer support. You might notice her American spelling in her e-mails to you! Tony Whitehead, creator of the Seaham Super Index, the large collection of parish record and transcriptions that launched this site in 2003, has been researching and transcribing census data and parish records for over 20 years. He is a Seaham native with extensive knowledge of the history of the area, and has written several books, including one on Mary Ann Cotton, Britain's most prolific murderess.
George Turns, a Seaham native and childhood friend of Tony's, brings a wealth of local family history knowledge and genealogy research experience to the site. George has transcribed many of our censuses and is currently working on expanding our parish record collection.
Ken Coleman, creator of the Sunderland Database, has been involved in Wearside genealogy and demography (16-18th Century) for over 15 years, many of which were spent in transcribing and indexing parish registers. He is particularly interested in Durham surnames and variants.
In addition to the above, we have acquired various partners with private collections of data, including Bert Wilson's Hartlepool parish records and Ron Nubley's West Durham Index (pre-1851 parish records for many western Durham parishes), which we are still in the process of adding to the site. We are continually adding newly transcribed censuses and parish records, and we strive for the most accurate records and best customer support in the business. We are also interested in adding new data collections, so if you have a collection of transcribed parish records or census data, please contact us.

Data Quality

We believe our data quality is high because all the transcription is done by people who are familiar with County Durham historic family & place names. When the handwriting is questionable, we cross-check the names against other censuses and parish records. Of course we make mistakes, as did the original recordkeepers, but we like to think we do a better job than a huge corporation employing hundreds of workers who know nothing about the names they are transcribing. We also promptly investigate and correct errors when they are brought to our attention.
