Refund Policy

Because there is no tangible product to be returned to us for resale, we do not offer refunds. We strive to keep the per-record cost low and to provide you with the maximum amount of information in your search results without giving away all of our hard work for free. We offer powerful search tools for refining your search, but the decision to view a final census entry or parish record is entirely yours, and we cannot absorb the costs if the family does not turn out to be one you were seeking. We suggest you refine your search further or contact us about performing a more detailed search internally for you at an hourly rate.

Of course, if there is any sort of problem with our system, such as:

  • the record number you receive is not the record number you requested
  • the record number is correct, but does not match the details returned in the search (name, age, record type, etc.)
  • our system experiences a problem between payment and order retrieval and your order is not retrieved after you have paid
  • you are billed more than once for the same order

just email us and we will promptly fix the problem and retrieve your order or refund your money as appropriate.

This refund policy conforms to the Consumer Protection Distance Selling Regulations 2000 (SI 2000 No. 2334) which provides for a "no refund" policy under exceptions 6.1(a) services that begin before the end of the cooling off period and 6.1(d) goods that due to their nature cannot be returned and possibly also (e) the supply of audio or video recordings or computer software if they are unsealed by the consumer.

Disclaimer: Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of these transcriptions and associated notes, the authors assume no liability for errors. Whenever possible, illegible names were compared against other sources, such as censuses and parish records, but because old handwriting is often hard to read and many pages have faded over time, transcription errors certainly exist. In addition, the census takers and parish clerks who recorded the original documents made errors. Researchers are encouraged to study the original records themselves and make their own decisions about the contents, and to supplement their conclusions with additional research. There is no guarantee that the information distributed on this web site is correct or true.

Customer Data
  • We save your e-mail address with your order so we can send your order results to you and, if necessary, communicate with you about problems with your credit card or order.
  • We save your name & address and use it to fill in the payment form after your first order. This saves you from having to enter the same information repeatedly.
  • We keep track of how many site credits you have and your preferences regarding email, currency, and a few other settings (which you can change at any time).
  • If (and only if) you request it, we will add you to our mailing list, which we use to notify you when new groups of records are added to Durham Records Online.
  • If you choose to participate in our Matching Service, your email address will be shared with other researchers who have purchased the same records you have purchased, and their email addresses will be shared with you.
  • We will not sell or share your information in any other way.

Site Data
We do not intend to invade anyone's personal privacy by publishing their records on this site. All of the information you will find on this site is public information, available under the Freedom of Information Act through other venues besides this site. Copies of parish register entries can be viewed at or ordered from the Durham County Record Office and certain other libraries by anyone. Similar information can be obtained from birth, marriage, and death certificates held by the Public Record Office, and some counties (including Durham) have begun to make the indexes to these records available online. We strive to provide price-conscious access to the same type of data, and hope to provide a superior index and search facility.

Census data is protected by Crown copyright and is published under the waiver conditions set out in Her Majesty's Stationery Office Guidance Note 3 - Copyright in Public Records - (GN3). Our census records were transcribed from those held by the Public Record Office in London.

Credit/debit card security

Security of your transaction is of utmost importance to us, and we also strive to make your transaction as convenient and hassle-free as possible. We offer two third-party payment processors to collect your card details: WorldPay and PayPal. Both are internationally renowned & experienced payment processing companies. This provides several levels of security for you:

  • Your card details are encrypted at the strongest possible level of SSL encryption (128-bit SSL) and sent over secured Internet lines, so are not visible to anyone during transmission. You will know you are in a secure Internet zone when a padlock appears in the lower right corner of your browser window frame.
  • Your card details are not provided to Durham Records Online. All of your card information is processed through the payment processors on their secure networks, and your card number is not saved after the sale is completed (except PayPal, who saves your card details so you can just enter your password next time you pay).
  • Your information will not be sold or leased or given to anyone.
  • If you are nervous about purchasing online, you should know that many studies show that most credit card theft stems from the loss or theft of the physical card, followed by counterfeit cards, which can be created from charge slips thrown in the trash at a retail store. Using your credit or debit card online does not pose a greater risk than using your card at your local shops; indeed, the risk appears to be far lower.

Pay by check instead: If you don't have or don't want to use a credit card, you are welcome to pay by check or money order. Just go through the order process and select Pay by Mail to print a mailable order form.

Currency convenience: We provide transaction processing in two currencies: British pounds and US dollars. This means that both UK and US customers are charged exactly what the bill is - there are no currency conversion fees imposed by your credit card issuer. Customers from other countries will have to choose which currency provides them with the most favorable conversion rate, and a small conversion fee (typically on the order of 0.02%) will be added by their credit card issuer.
